Everyone is always impressed when I tell them I work as a Digital Marketing Manager for a skincare company. It’s easy to see why.
People see the selfies on social media, the working from anywhere, or even just a random photo of me packing up an influencer PR box and presume it must be fun. And yes, it is very fun.
But, more than fun, I've learned so much over the past five years about what it means to be a digital marketer for a business.
Let me tell you 5 things I've learned.
1. Staying Consistent is the Only Thing That Will Bring Results
If you want people to follow your brand on social media or check out your website, then you need to offer them something valuable in return for their attention. The best way I've found for doing this is creating consistent content that does two things: teaches people something new or answers their questions; and gives them a reason to engage with your brand again in the future (which could lead to an actual conversion).
2. Your Personal Brand Matters
In today's world, it's important to not only understand how to use social media and content to engage with people but also how to build your brand. Your personal brand is the foundation of everything that you do, so it's important that you're authentic and genuine in all of your interactions with others online.
The first step is identifying what makes up your personal brand — what do people come away thinking about you when they first meet? What do they remember about you? Once you have this down, it's easier to know how best to represent yourself online.
3. Technology Changes, But People & Marketing Principles Remain the Same
In the past decade, technology has advanced significantly, leading to the launch of new advertising channels and countless new tools for marketers. Although technology has changed dramatically, human behavior hasn't changed much. If you can learn how to understand human behavior and respond to it in an effective way, you will be miles ahead of your competitors who are often focusing on tactics instead of strategies.
4. Listen to the Data–and Pivot When Necessary.
You might have a great idea, but if it doesn’t have any proof behind it (like hard data) then you can’t really use it as leverage when making decisions.
If something isn’t working, change it. You don’t have to stick with something that isn’t working just because you like it or because you think people might like it in theory. If something isn’t working, try something else!
5. Keep Investing in Yourself and Always Look for Ways to Improve
You should keep investing in yourself and always look for ways to improve. Being able to adapt quickly is one of the most important attributes for success as a digital marketer.
This means that you need to continue learning new skills in order to stay ahead of the curve. If you're not constantly improving yourself, you'll fall behind other marketers who are doing so every day. You should invest time each week into learning something new — whether it's through books, podcasts, or certifications — or by attending conferences or networking events with other professionals who have similar interests as you do.
